With the themes of #marchingforward and #accelerateaction, the panel discussion, involving her Honour Justice Maree Kennedy judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria Court of Appeal, Lara Wiggins of KordaMentha; and Brendan Swift of Altus Lawyers was enlightening. Sharing their own unique experiences, learnings and views on how we can work together as industry and a profession to achieve equality for women. Moderated by Krystal Everitt of Cor Cordis who asked some tough questions of our panellists. It was a great opportunity for both junior and senior women of the industry to hear how they build resilience and thrive in high pressure situations. Thank you to all those who attended. WIRV recognises the important of mentoring, particularly for junior women in the profession. The WIRV Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for WIRV members at any level to be paired with an experienced mentor within the industry. WIRV is inviting all members to register in the 2025 Mentoring Program. Members can register their interest to be a mentor, a mentee or both. The Mentoring Program provides opportunities for both mentors and mentees and can be tailored to what each member is hoping to achieve from the Program. To participate in the program, WIRV requires mentors and mentees to each complete a short questionnaire about the mentor/mentee’s position and objectives. Mentors and mentees are then paired together by the WIRV Advocacy Sub-committee prior to the program commencing. The mentors and mentees commit to a 12-month program running from February to December. The 2025 mentors and mentees will also receive an invitation to our exclusive mentoring mixer networking night, which will take place on Thursday, 20 February 2025. Registration in the 2025 Mentoring Program is open to all WIRV members. To register as a mentor, please click here to sign up and complete the mentor Initial Questionnaire. In 2017, her Honour was appointed as the twelfth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is the second woman to assume the role. Before being appointed to the judiciary, the Chief Justice was a partner at Allens, where she specialised in insolvency and commercial litigation.

Prior to joining ASIC, Sarah was a Commissioner at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for three terms from May 2008 to May 2021. She contributed to the strategic leadership and corporate governance of the ACCC and decision-making across range of complex economy-wide legal and economic issues. Sarah has extensive experience in government legal work, including compliance, restrictive trade practices, mergers and acquisitions, consumer protection and law enforcement litigation. She previously worked as a senior executive lawyer with the Australian Government Solicitor, working with Australian Government agencies to provide advice on complex and sensitive legal matters.

The purpose of the AGM is to: confirm the minutes of the 2022 Annual General Meeting; receive from the Committee of Management reports as to the business conducted by WIRV during its 2022/2023 committee year; receive and consider the Special Purpose Financial Report of WIRV for the 2022 financial year; and appoint a new Committee of Management. We are grateful to Brett Warren of ASIC who discussed the introduction of a new form of voidable transaction known as a Creditor Defeating Disposition (CDD). In February 2020, legislation received royal assent that introduced a CDDs.  The presentation covered the following: 1. ASIC’s work in and around CDDs; 2. The legislation that applies to the new CDD transaction; 3. ASIC’s process for handling a liquidator’s request for it to make an order for money or property against a person who has benefited form a CDD; and 4. The winner of the Women in Insolvency & Restructuring Victoria’s inaugural Young Gun Award 2017 was announced at a cocktail evening at the Grand Hyatt on 17 October 2017.Congratulations to Kathryn Smith of Ashurst Australia. As one judge described Kathryn, “she has achieved a lot in her four years. I was impressed by her professional achievements but also by her breadth of work in academia, thought leadership and law reform. She seems highly involved in volunteering and in the industry in both issues that focus on the advancement of women and other social justice matters.” The Award was open to an outstanding woman who has been practicing in the insolvency industry for one to five years (inclusive).  Open for nominations across all areas of insolvency and reconstruction, the Award was judged by an independent panel from the accounting, banking and legal industries. It was our largest attendance in history, with over 825 guests enjoying an afternoon of food, wine, footy and networking to celebrate the 18th anniversary of our organisation in Victoria.Dave O’Neil was our MC and our special guests included Michael Voss, Tony Shaw, Billy Brownless and Nathan Brown who provided an entertaining and insightful panel discussing the 2014 AFL footy season. The annual live auction conducted by GraysOnline was very well supported, with all proceeds (approximatley $12,000) going to Alannah and Madeline Foundation. The auction followed an address from the CEO of the Foundation, Dr Judith Slocombe, who provided a passionate overview of the charity which is dedicated to protecting and preventing children from violence and bullying and advocating for children’s safety and wellbeing. The annual IWIRC Trivia Night was held on Thursday, 20 June 2013 at the Royal Melbourne Hotel on Bourke Street. This year we decided to introduce a new style of Trivia, using wireless buzzers to lock in answers quickly and easily. Once everyone familiarised themselves with the answer consoles it is fair to say everyone enjoyed the alternative Trivia style, with fingers buzzing and shouts of abstain being heard from afar!  A number of teams showed their talents with exuberant displays of singing and dancing to gain some additional points. A great night was had by all, in particular those from Lonsdale Chambers who came in first and second place. Congratulations to the Lonsdale Chambers team on a great win. Monday, 4 March 2013 saw the IPA and IWIRC (Vic) combine to host the annual Golf Day which was held at the prestigious Commonwealth Golf Club. The IPA hosted the 18 hole event which teed off at midday. This was followed by the Golf Clinic hosted by IWIRC (Vic).The weather was particularly kind – a beautiful mid-30’s sunny day. Attendees enjoyed a light lunch, refreshing fruit platters and drinks at the bar followed by pre-dinner drinks and canapés in the evening.
